George Washington University Handles Mercyhurst University 13-6 to Finish Ninth at 2012 CWPA Eastern Championship
PROVIDENCE, RI -- Megan Brolley (So., Delray Beach, Fla./Saint Andrew's School) scored four times to earn Player of the Game honors as George Washington University used five-goal outbursts in the first and fourth periods to overcome Notre Dame College 13-6 in the ninth place game of the 2012 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Eastern Championship.
George Washington (12-15), which placed 10th (2000), eighth (2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2011) and seventh (2003) in its previous trips to the league championship tournament, constructed a 4-0 lead in the first period and never looked back in defeating the Lakers (12-19) for the third time this season.
Leading 5-3 after a period of play, George Washington expanded the margin to 7-4 by the end of the first half and 8-5 by the conclusion of the third period. Facing the possibility of a Lakers' comeback, GW put any doubts to rest by pouring in five more goals in the fourth quarter to blow the game open and roll to a seven score victory.
Overall, five GW players tallied two or more goals in the contest as Megan Walker (Sr., San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente), Katherine Berry (So., Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly), Rachael Bentley (So., Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) and Monica Hanson (Sr., Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd/UC-San Diego) each contributed a pair to join Brolley in posting multi-marker games. Megan Moreland (Fr., La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla) chipped in a solo marker for the Colonials.
For Mercyhurst, Lisett Calderon (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) led the way with four goals, while Kimberly Goodhart (Sr., Reading, Pa./Reading) and Laura Perez (Sr., Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) completed their collegiate careers by tacking on single scores to comprise the Lakers' offensive output.
In cage, Hope Rozelle (Sr., San Diego, Calif./Racho Bernardo) stopped five shots in taking the loss, with GW's Chandler Vilander (Fr., Santa Barbara, Calif./Doe Pueblos) notching four blocks for the victory.
