Freeborn & Zakirova Honored at 2012 Hartwick College Student-Athlete Awards Ceremony
ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Kamila Zakirova (So., Almaty, Kazakhstan) and Sasha Freeborn (Jr., Auckland, New Zealand) were recognized with honors at the 2012 Hartwick College Student-Athlete Awards Ceremony at the Binder Physical Education Center's Lambros Arena.
Freeborn garnered the team's Most Valuable Player award as she earned Collegiate Water Polo Association All-Western Division First Team honors. She posted a career high 57 goals and 45 assists for 102 points in 40 games this season, with 29 starts. In addition, she added 44 steals while tying for second on the squad in both points and assists as she is currently tied for seventh in career points with 115.
Zakirova claimed the Brunhilde Klinger Memorial Award, presented to the "outstanding female freshman athlete at Hartwick College."
In her first year with the Hawks, she appeared in 36 games with 24 starts while tying for third on the squad in goals with 59. An All-Western Division Second Team selection, she ranked second on the team in assists (43) and tied with Freeborn for second in points (102), she also ranked second in steals with 58. A five-time CWPA Western Division Rookie of the Week selection, she claimed the league's Western Division Rookie of the Year award in addition to earning All-Eastern Championship Second Team honors.
