Collegiate Water Polo Association Announces Changes to Southern Division Championship Schedule
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The coaches of the Collegiate Water Polo Association's Southern Division have unanimously approved a schedule change for the division championship this weekend at Bucknell University.
Proposed by Brown University head coach Felix Mercado, the new schedule minimizes the number of games to four on Saturday, April 14 and three on Sunday, April 15. In addition, the new format eliminates bracket play and pits the seeds against one another on Saturday to determine the placement games on Sunday.
The six-team championship will begin at 9:30 a.m. when No. 3 seed Brown University takes on No. 6 seed Mercyhurst College. No. 4 seed Bucknell University and No. 5 seed George Washington University follow at 11:00 a.m., before the winner of the Brown-Mercyhurst game returns to the tank to meet No. 2 seed Harvard University at 5:00 p.m. in the semifinals. First day action concludes with a 6:30 p.m. semifinal matchup pitting No. 1 seed/No. 14-nationally ranked Princeton University agains the victor of the Bucknell-George Washington contest.
On Sunday, fifth (9:30 a.m.), third (11:00 a.m.) and first (12:30 p.m.) places being decided in back-to-back-to-back games.
The Southern Division Champion is guaranteed no lower than the No. 2 seed for the CWPA Eastern Championship on April 27-29 at Brown University in Providence, R.I., while the remainder of the field featuring all the teams from the Western and Southern Divisions will be established via a seeding commitee comprised of the league's head coaches.
