No. 13 University of Michigan Runs Past George Washington University, 16-4
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan water polo team jumped back in the win column with a 16-4 victory over George Washington University inside the University of Maryland's Eppley Recreation Center.
The Wolverines used 11 goals in the first half to control the remainder of the game and held the Colonials scoreless until the third period while gathering six steals.
Eleven Wolverines tallied a score behind a total of 28 attempts. Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista), Lauren Colton (Tustin, Calif./Tesoro), Claire Ivry (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte), Audrey Pratt (Burlingame, Calif./Burlingame) and Meagan Cobb (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) each netted a pair to power the Wolverines' offense, which converted three of four power plays. In the cage, goalkeeper Tara Brigham (Baytown, Texas/Sterling) recorded career highs with 15 blocks and five assists.
In the first period, Michigan scored eight markers, sparked by a Kelsey Nolan (San Jose, Calif./Leland) shot a little more than 30 seconds into the game and spotlighted by a backhand from Cobb at 1:06.
Michigan added three more goals in the second period behind Pratt, Elizabeth Watson (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) and Lauren Dudley (Okemos, Mich./Okemos), who nailed U-M's final goal of the first half as the Wolverines went into the break up, 11-0.
Michigan opened the third quarter with a goal from Pratt less than a minute in, before George Washington scored three straight to make it 12-3. Michigan halted the Colonials' momentum less than 90 seconds into the fourth period when Lauren Thatcher (Canyon Lake, Calif/Temescal Canyon) sent in a strike to help U-M outscore George Washington, 4-1, to close out the game.
