PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The 12th-ranked University of Michigan water polo team picked up a 7-5 win over No. 14 University of California-Davis at Avery Aquatic Center after opening the day with a 10-3 loss to No. 4 University of California-Los Angeles at Baker Pool. The Wolverines posted a 1-3 mark at the Stanford Invitational to place seventh in the two-day event.
Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif.) scored four goals on the day to lead U-M's offense. Lauren Colton (Mission Viejo, Calif.) added two goals, while Meagan Cobb (Hudsonville, Mich.), Hathaway Moore (Atherton, Calif.), Elizabeth Williams (Carlsbad, Calif.), Kelsey Nolan (San Jose, Calif.) and Lauren Thatcher (Canyon Lake, Calif.) finished the day with one apiece. Goalkeeper Tara Brigham (Baytown, Texas) recorded six saves.
Against No. 14 UC-Davis, Golden, Williams and Nolan scored to help Michigan carry a 3-2 advantage into the second quarter. The Aggies retaliated with two goals before the break, but a score from Thatcher kept the score even at the half, 4-4.
Michigan's assault in the third period gave them the advantage as Colton and Golden added scores to outscore UC Davis in the second half, 3-1.
Earlier in the day, Michigan looked to avenge a loss to No. 4 UCLA earlier this season. Michigan knotted the score twice in the first half, when Golden and Cobb's goals made it 2-2. Trailing by one in the second quarter, Colton hit a shot to draw the score even, 3-3. UCLA retaliated with seven unanswered goals in the final two frames to extend the lead and secure the win.
