BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University women's water polo head coach Barry King has announced the hiring of Pat Beemer as assistant coach. Beemer spent the past six seasons as the head coach at Wagner.
"Pat will bring exceptional experience to our team," said King. "He has played and coached at a very high level. Our student-athletes will benefit greatly from his experience as we strive to win championships. He is an innovative and energetic young coach. His passion for the game is infectious. He is an outstanding addition to the Indiana University water polo program."
Beemer produced a 116-89 overall record at Wagner, including a 48-16 mark in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. He earned the 2010 MAAC Coach of the Year award, which was the second of his career.
"I've been afforded a tremendous opportunity at IU," said Beemer. "I'm looking forward to working with Coach King and the Hoosier community."
In his time at Wagner, Beemer coached 11 All-MAAC First Team selections, 12 All-MAAC Second Team selections, 29 MAAC All-Academic honorees, three All-America and two Academic All-America selections.
In 2010, he coached goalkeeper Kelsey Rodgers, an Honorable Mention All-America, as well as the nation's leader in saves (505) and save percentage (.633).
Beemer began his stint at Wagner in 2005 and led the Seahawks to two NCAA Tournament appearances in his first three seasons at the helm, while posting a 66-41 overall record (28-4 MAAC) during that period.
He also guided Wagner to three MAAC Regular Season Championships. The most recent title came in 2009 as the Seahawks finished that campaign with an 8-2 record in MAAC play after winning seven of their final eight contests.
A Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) official during the men's sdason, Beemer was also the head coach of the Downey High School Boy's and Girl's Water Polo and Swim teams in his hometown of Downey, Calif. before taking over at Wagner. He coached the school to a pair of San Gabriel League Championships in 2001 and 2002, as well as an appearance in the 2003 CIF Semifinals.
In 2003, Beemer served as an instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy Water Polo Camp. He also worked at Rio Hondo College in Whittier, Calif. as a student assistant in 1995. During his career, he has also worked with Maureen O'Toole, a 2000 Olympian, and three-time Olympian Craig Wilson.
Beemer had a successful playing career at the University of California-San Diego as a goalkeeper. He helped the Tritons to a No. 7 national ranking during his career at UCSD.
Beemer replaces Kandace Waldthaler, who accepted a position at UC Davis after four seasons as an assistant coach at Indiana.
