2010 Men's CWPA Eastern Championship Schedule Released
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) has released the schedule of games for the 2010 Men's CWPA Eastern Championship at Bucknell University on November 19-21. The championship will decide the league's automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championship to be held on December 4-5 at the University of California.
Similar to past seasons, the top four teams from the Southern and Northern Championship fields will earn berths to the CWPA Eastern Championship with a shot a taking the league's title and automatic berth to the NCAA Championship.
In the history of the championship, 12 teams have claimed the Eastern crown with Princeton University (2009, 2004, 1992), the United States Naval Academy (2008, 2007, 2006, 2003, 2000, 1990, 1988, 1987, 1986), Saint Francis College (2005), Queens College (2002, 1997), the University of Massachusetts (2001, 1999, 1998, 1996, 1995, 1994, 1993), Slippery Rock University (1991), the University of Arkansas (1989), Brown University (1985, 1984, 1983, 1981), Loyola University (1982), Bucknell University (1980, 1979, 1978, 1977, 1975), the University of Pittsburgh (1976) and Yale University (1974, 1973, 1972) holding titles.
Recently, the Southern Division has dominated the championship with Princeton and Navy combining for the past four titles. Overall, the South has been the preeminent division in the new millenium capturing seven of the past 10 tournaments with five titles by Navy and two by Princeton.
Further, since 2002 either/or the Midshipmen or the Tigers have appeared in the title tilt with Navy advancing to the 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 games, with Princeton making the 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2009 contests.
