No. 13 Grand Valley State Lakers Harpoon North Carolina 10-6 in National Collegiate Club 11th Place Game
CEDAR CITY, Utah -- Ryan Kraai (Sr., Zeeland, Mich.) recorded three goals and Jon Tschirhart (Jr., Jension, Mich.) added two more to lead the No. 13 Grand Valley State University Lakers to a 10-6 victory over the University of North Carolina in the 11th place and final game of the 2010 Men's National Collegiate Club Championship at Southern Utah University.
The Lakers put the game away early ripping off six straight goals throughout the first and second periods before Nicholas Marsden (Sr., Carlsbad, Calif.) broke the ice for the Tarheels with 1:31 remaining in the second period for a 6-1 GVSU lead at halftime.
Tschirhart started the run with a marker at the 5:03 mark of the first period before Kraai scored twice (1:28, 00:04) and Michael Begrowicz (So., Mundelein, Ill.) drilled a shot with 43 seconds left in the opening frame to carry a 4-0 lead into the second period.
In the second period, Dakota McCaw (Fr., Holland, Mich.) contributed a score at 5:08 before Doug MacDonald (Fr., Holland, Mich.) uncorked a sinking shot that made it 6-0 with 2:44 remaining in the first half.
Tschirhart struck again to open the third period with a strike at the 6:03 mark before UNC's Robbie Boland (So., Sinking Spring, Pa.) popped a shot past the posts on a man-up opportunity to cut the lead to 7-2. GVSU recovered the goal with seven seconds left in the period as Josh Gonzales (So., Zeeland, Mich.) zipped in an advantage goal for an 8-2 lead.
North Carolina attempted to climb back into the game in the dawning moments of the fourth period as Stefan McCarver (Sr., Novato, Calif.) pushed in a goal at 4:40 and Boland connected on another natural goal at 4:00 to trim the deficit to 8-4.
Josh Geneva (Sr., Grand Haven, Mich.) and Kraai finished the GVSU scoring at 3:12 and 1:33, respectively, to rebuild the margin to six goals at 10-4. UNC finshed out the 2010 Men's National Collegiate Club season by retaliating for the pair of tallies by recording a pair from the hand of Boland as the sophomore dumped in natural (1:06) and man-up (00:03) goals for the 10-6 final score.
In cage, Steve Sinclair (Fr., Manhattan Beach, Calif.) conclude the game with eight saves, while Peter Huyser (Sr., Zeeland, Mich.) notched six stops to earn the victory in potentially his final collegiate club game of a standout career.
