2010 Men's National Collegiate Club Schedule & Scores
CEDAR CITY, Utah -- David Skophammer (Jr., Palos Verdes, Calif.) drilled the cage with four shots to provide half the offense for No. 17 Yale University in an 8-6 upset victory over No. 6 Oregon in the opening round of the 2010 Men's National Collegiate Club Championship at Southern Utah University.
The Bulldogs advance to a 9:00 a.m. showdown with No. 2 University of California-Los Angeles on Saturday, November 13, while the Ducks will meet tournament host Southern Utah at 9:50 p.m. later this evening in the consolation bracket.
Yale trailed only once in the game as Oregon's Taylor Herman (Jr., San Ramon, Calif.) opened the scoring by burying a penalty shot with six seconds left in the first period for a 1-0 Ducks' lead.
The Bulldogs recovered the goal at the 4:43 mark of the second period when Thomas Lazzarini (Sr., San Marino, Calif.) split the Ducks with a rocket from the wings to knot the game. Yale took the lead for good nearly three minutes later when Derek West (Gr., Oswego, Calif.) converted on a man-up chance with 1:50 remaining in the half before the Bulldogs cushioned the margin with a natural goal by Skophammer at the 1:17 mark.
Oregon pulled to within one marker before the end of the first half as Zach Yensen (Sr., Lake Oswego, Calif.) tossed in an even-strength score to make it 3-2 through 14 minutes of play.
Yale picked up a pair of advantage goals in the third period as Skophammer nailed a shot at 3:06 and Paul Orland (Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) converted on a chance at 1:05 to build the Bulldogs' lead to 5-2 and set-up a gunfight in the fourth period.
Leading 6-2 following a strike by Dom Kwok (So., Hong Kong) with 5:44 on the clock, Yale and Oregon saw defense fly out the window as Jake Allen (Jr., La Jolla, Calif.) scored at 5:23 for the Ducks, Skophammer answered at 5:02, Herman countered at 3:03 and Skophammer responded at 2:37 to make the score 8-4.
Not to be outdone, Oregon rattled off back-to-back scores at 2:20 and 1:36 by Matthew Sillaman (Sr., Riverside, Calif.) and Yensen, but it was not enough to overcome Yale's four goal lead for the 8-6 final.
In cage, Keith Rubin (Jr., Bethesda, Md.) earned the victory for the Bulldogs protecting the house with 13 saves. Anthony Nuccio (Jr., San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) finished with seven saves in suffering the loss for Oregon.
