No. 2 UCLA Grounds Southern Utah Thunderbirds 20-1 in Men's National Collegiate Club Championship Opening Game

2010 Men's National Collegiate Club Schedule & Scores

CEDAR CITY, Utah -- No. 2 nationally ranked the University of California-Los Angeles received scoring from 14 different players, including four goals from Player of the Game Max Scott (Jr., La Canada Flintridge, Calif.) to overpower the host Thunderbirds of Southern Utah University 20-1 in the opening game of the 2010 Men's National Collegiate Club Championship at SUU's Sorensen Center.

Scott gave the Pacific Coast Division Bruins all they needed to pick up the win in the first 1:30 of play as he tallied a hat-trick with markers at 6:33, 5:55 and 5:27 to stake UCLA to a 3-0 lead.  The offense continued for the Bruins throughout the remainder of the first period as Michael Olson (Jr., Los Altos, Calif.) deked through the Thunderbirds' defense for a man-up gaol at 4:39, while Cameron Virjee (Jr., Rolling Hills, Calif.) tacked on a nautral goal at 3:53 and Michael Gonzales (Sr., South Pasadena, Calif.) zipped in a five-meter penalty shot at 1:18 to make it 6-0 after seven minutes of competition.

The defending national champion after capturing the 2009 National Collegiate Club Championship by defeating Florida International University at the University of Florida, UCLA erased any doubts of this year's team being a drop-off from the '09 squad as Tommy Cornelius (So., Piedmont, Calif.) and Dawson Jope (Sr., Sacramento, Calif.) connected on catch-and-shoot chances at 5:40 and 4:11, respectively, to run the scoring to 8-0.  Eric Sasse (So., Walnut Creek, Calif.) completed the first-half damage with back-to-back markers at 3:31 and 2:33 to put the Bruins in front 10-0 at halftime.

It took Southern Utah only 59 seconds in the second half to break-up the shutout as Greg Barnes (So., Cedar City, Utah) beat the Bruins' goalie Mike Scott (Jr., La Canada Flintridge, Calif.) at the 6:01 mark to pull the Thunderbirds within nine.

The goal reignited the UCLA offense as the Bruins poured on nine goals in the period from nine different players to rack-up a 19-1 lead.

Neither team was able to muster much in the fourth as Scott scored on a man-up bid at 5:45 as UCLA rolled into a 9:00 a.m. meeting on Saturday, November 13 against the victor of a first round game between No. 6 University of Oregon and No. 17 Yale University with a berth to the semifinals on the line.

Southern Utah will return to the Sorensen Center at 9:50 p.m. this evening to face the loser of the Oregon-Yale game.
