White-Out: White Scores Twice as No. 15 Arizona Stuns No. 12 Utah 6-4 in National Collegiate Club Championship Ninth Place Game
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Patricia White (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) scored twice to garner Player of the Game honors as No. 15-ranked and tournament host the University of Arizona stunned No. 12 University of Utah 6-4 in the 2010 Women's National Collegiate Club Championship Ninth Place Game.
The place marks the first time Arizona has ever finished ninth in the field as the team previously placed 11th (2001), seventh (2007), sixth (2009) and fourth (2008, 2000). For Utah, the 10th place mark is the lowest the Utes have ever finished at Nationals following eighth (2009), fourth (2004) and sixth (2002) place marks.
Arizona built a 2-0 lead in the final minute of the first period as White drilled a man-up goal and registered a natural tally at 56 and 14 seconds, respectively. The margin expanded to 3-0 with 5:02 left in the second period as Rachel Rodia (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz.) converted on a five-meter penalty shot, but Utah climbed back into the game with markers by Adri Pachelli (Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah) and Katie Maasberg (Sr., Salt Lake City, Utah) at the 4:47 and 2:49 marks for a 3-2 game at halftime.
Following a scoreless third period, the Utes tied the game at 3-all on a catch-and-shoot by Mandy Meridith-Dunlop (Gr., Salt Lake City, Utah) with 5:26 left on the game clock. Jennifer Shah (Sr., Yuma, Ariz.) put Arizona back in front with an even-strength goal with 5:11 to go, but Utah retied the contest 17 seconds later courtesy a marker by Pachelli.
Ashley Gucinski (Gr., Naperville, Ill.) posted the eventual game-winning goal on a man-up opportunity with 3:07 on the clock and Brett Begley (So., San Diego, Calif.) contributed an insurance tally wth 54 seconds left for the 6-4 final.
In cage, Ashley Francis (Jr., Eugene, Ore.) recorded six saves to pick up the win, while Utah's Sarah Clos (Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah) and Lou Canfield (So., Salt Lake City, Utah) combined for six saves.
