No. 12 Utah Handles Illinois State 12-7 in Consolation Round of the National Collegiate Club Championship
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Emily Haws (So., Redlands, Calif.) scored six goals as No. 12 the University of Utah used a seven-goal first half outburst to overpower and overcome Illinois State University 12-7 in the consolation round of the 2010 Women's National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Arizona.
The Utes never trailed in the game and opened up a 4-0 lead just 3:12 into the contest as Adri Pachelli (Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah), Haws and Mandy Meridith-Dunlop (Gr., Salt Lake City, Utah) found the back of the cage at 6:29, 6:01 and 5:08 before Haws closed out the run with an extra-man tally at 3:48.
Illinois State pulled to within three at 4-1 with 3:04 to play on a blast from the wings by Ashley Rampick (So., Oak Lawn, Ill.), but Utah closed out the first period with a natural goal by Pachelli at the 2:49 mark and another man-up marker by Haws at 1:52 to make it 6-1.
The Redbirds sliced the margin back to four at 6-2 with 6:06 left in the second period courtesy a score by Christine Byron (Jr., Barrington, Ill.), a spread which the teams would maintain at halftime as Haws tacked on her third man-up scoring shot and ISU's Danielle Soudan (Sr., Mundelein, Ill.) cashed in with a shot from the near post at 3:24 to make it 7-3 at halftime.
Illinois State continued to shave the lead down pulling to within 8-5 with 17 seconds left in the third period, but Haws added her fourth man-up goal of the evening with four ticks left on the period clock to make it 9-5 and solidify her status as Player of the Game.
The margin continued to expand to open the fourth period as Meridith-Dunlop netted an even-strength goal at 5:34 and Haws whipped home a five-meter penalty shot at 3:46 to make it an 11-5 contest, a deficit which the Redbirds could not overcome in the waning moments of the game on the way to the 12-7 final score.
Between the pipes Lou Canfield (So., Salt Lake City, Utah) earned the win for the Utes with two saves, while ISU's Emily Bornhoff (Fr., La Grange, Ill.) blocked down seven shots in taking the loss.
Utah will next be in action at 5:10 p.m. on Saturday, April 24 when the Utes take on the winner of second round game between No. 9-ranked Grand Valley State University and No. 19 New York University with a berth in the ninth place game at stake. Illinois State will next meet the loser of the GVSU-NYU game for a spot the 13th place game at 2:50 on the 24th.
