No. 8 Penn Edges No. 17 Boston College 6-4 in National Collegiate Club Championship Opening Round
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Amanda Zwarenstein (Jr., Los Altos, Calif.) recorded a hat-trick, while Elizabeth Lawrence (Sr., New York, N.Y.) blocked eight shots to earn Player of the Game honors as No. 8-ranked the University of Pennsylvania held off No. 17 Boston College 6-4 in the opening round of the 2010 Women's National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Arizona.
The teams traded scores within 27 seconds to open the contest as BC's Meghan Grimes (Jr., Walpole, Mass.) tallied a man-up goal at 4:45 and Zwarenstein responded for the Quakers at 4:18 for a 1-1 stalemate after a period of play.
Penn began to pull away in the first moments of the second period as Zwarenstein registered an exclusion marker and a natural goal at 6:00 and 5:12, respectively, to make it 3-1 before Megan Calpin (Sr., Lake Oswego, Ore.) rattled the cage with a blast from the wing at 1:11 to push the Quakers out to a 4-1 lead. The Eagles trimmed the margin back to a pair of tallies before the end of the first half as Mary Keeley (Fr., Rockford, Mich.) netted an exclusion score with 45 seconds left in the period to make it 4-2 at the break.
Boston College continued to rally with a succesful five-meter penalty shot by Mackenzie Campbell (Jr., Foster City, Calif.) with 3:53 left in the third period, but Kathryn Nary (So., Westlake Village, Calif.) uncorked a shot which sailed into the cage on a man-up chance to make it 5-3 entering the fourth period.
The Eagles again pulled to within one with 3:15 left on the game clock as Lisa Stebbins (Jr., Portsmouth, N.H.) scored off an exclusion opportunity, but Penn was able to seal the victory with a natural goal by Natasa Kordic (Sr., Sacramento, Calif.) for the 6-4 final score.
In cage, Lia Breunig (Jr., Walnut Creek, Calif.) finished with eight saves in taking the loss for Boston College.
The victory places Penn into a meeting at 10:10 a.m. on Saturday, April 24 against the victor of a first round game between No. 5 University of California-Santa Cruz and No. 17 Middlebury College, while Boston College will take on the loser of the UC-Santa Cruz vs. Middlebury game at 6:20 p.m. this evening.
