No. 4 Michigan Powers Past No. 9 Grand Valley State 7-2 in 2010 National Collegiate Club Opening Round
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Allison Born (Sr., Santa Monica, Calif.) scored five times, including three markers in the second half, as No. 4 University of Michigan shutdown No. 9 Grand Valley State University to build from a halftime tie to a 7-2 victory over the Lakers in the opening round of the National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Arizona.
Tied 2-2 following a period of play in which Grand Valley State's Katelyn Clancy (Sr., Portage, Mich.) and Michelle Clancy (Sr., Portage, Mich.) found the back of the cage at 1:34 and 49 seconds to equal man-up and natural goals from Bor, neither team could crack the other squad's defense in the second period.
Needing an offensive infusion, the Wolverines turned to Jessie Carr (Jr., Palo Alto, Calif.) who rattled the cage with a blast at the 3:23 mark of the third period. The goal brought Born back to life as she ripped a shot into the twine with four seconds remaining in the period to make it 4-2 with seven minutes of play remainingin the contest.
Following a marker by Merideth Segovia (Jr., East Grand Rapids, Mich.) to make it 5-2, Born closed out the contest with back-to-back tallies at 3:19 and 1:26 for the 7-2 final.
In cage, Kat Godlewski (Sr., Troy, Mich.) recorded 10 stops to pick-up the win, while Kim Arnold (Sr., Grand Haven, Mich.) netted 11 stops for the Lakers.
Michigan advances to an 11:20 a.m. meeting with No. 3 University of Notre Dame on Saturday, April 24 in the tournament's second round with a bid to the semifinals at stake. Overall, Michigan is 1-1 against the Fighting Irish this season with a 7-5 win and a 4-2 loss.
Grand Valley State will next be in action at 8:40 p.m. this evening against No. 19 New York University in the consolation bracket.
