No. 14 Indiana Handles Brown 8-5 in Eastern Championship First Round

COLLEGE PARK, Md. --  Kara Butler (Jr., Poway, Calif./Poway) scored four times to lead five University of Indiana scorers as the No. 14-nationally ranked Hoosiers upended Brown University 8-5 in the fourth and final game of the 2010 Eastern Championship first round at the University of Maryland’s Eppley Recreation Center.

Indiana, which advances to a date with unranked Princeton University in the tournament semifinals on Saturday, May 1 at 6:00 p.m., put the game away with a 3-0 scoring advantage in the second period.  Brown, which will meet No. 19-ranked Bucknell University in the consolation round tomorrow at 3:00 p.m., could not overcome the deficit as the Bears and Hoosiers traded goals in the third and fourth periods for the 8-5 final score.

The Hoosiers never trailed in the game as Hanna Eimstad (So., Portland, Ore./Beaverton) put home a man-up chance with 6:25 left in the first period.  Rita Bullwinkel (Jr., Portola Valley, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) responded for the Bears with a counter goal  at 5:25, but Butler turned her defender at two-meters and ripped a shot which drew nothing but twine at the 5:05 mark to return the Hoosiers to the lead.

Butler turned her defender again at 3:54 and repeated her earlier actions to make it 3-1, but Lauren Presant (Sr., Poway, Calif./Poway) scored at even-strength (2:45) and on a man-up chance (1:42) to tie the game at three-all.

The tie lasted until the 7:01 mark of the second period when Nicole Redder (Jr., Grandville, Mich./Jenison) dumped a shot into the cage one second following the conclusion of a man-up to make if 4-3.   Indiana expanded the margin to 6-3 by the end of the period as Lauren Wyckoff (Jr., Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) lobbed a shot into the cage at 2:52 and Butler converted on a rollaway with 28 ticks in the first half to give the Hoosiers a three-goal lead.

Brown and Indiana traded salvos in the third period as Sarah Glick (Sr., Bonita, Calif./Bonita Vista) clicked off an outside shot which sailed inside the left post to make it 6-4, but Butler bashed the Bears with a rollaway shot at two-meters with the clock showing 4:29 to make it 7-4.

The teams repeated the back-and-forth fire in the fourth period as Kelsey Campbell (Jr., Maple Ridge, B.C./Maple Ridge Secondary) bombed away with a shot from the outside which found the cage at 5:48 before Glick tacked on her second tally at 1:11 for the 8-5 final.

In cage, Stephanie Laing (Sr., Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) took the loss for the Bears with 10 saves, while Cassie Wyckoff (So., Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) notched the victory with nine stops.
