Connecticut College Uses Strong Second Half to Stave Off Macalester 12-9 at CWPA Division III Championship

UTICA, N.Y. -- Player of the Game Phoebe Bakanas (Sr., Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) scored five goals and Emily Hunter (So., Cheshire, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) added a hat-trick in the fourth period as Connecticut College rallied from a 6-5 halftime deficit to outscore Macalester College 7-3 in the second half and roll to a 12-9 victory in the fifth place game at the 2010 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championship at Utica College.

Leading 5-3 following the first period, Macalester pushed the margin to 6-3 midway through the second period as Jillian Benson (Jr., Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) sniped a shot from the outside which eluded Camels' netminder Pamela Lovejoy (Fr., Guilford, Conn./Hopkins School) to push the lead out to 6-3 with 3:16 left in the half.

Connecticut chipped away at the deficit in the waning moments of the period behind the play of Bakanas who scored on a man-up chance at 2:36 and lined a free-throw shot from seven-meters out on a restart at 1:56 for her third marker of the day and a 6-5 Scots' lead at the break.

Macalester returned the margin to a pair of goals 18 seconds into the new half as Sarah Ellerton (Sr., Suffield, Conn./Suffield Academy) skipped a shot into the cage a the 7:42 mark, but the goal was a turning point in the contest.

For the next seven minutes of play the Scots' offense went cold, while the Camels wandered out of the scoring desert and began a 4-0 run which lasted six minutes.

Bakanas started the scoring stream at 7:17 as she connected on a long shot from the right-wing.  Kristin Lampley (Fr., Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) then took over the game tacking on a bomb from the left-wing as a man-up chance expired at the 6:09 mark before flicking another long shot from the southpaw side at 3:12 to put the Camels in front 8-7.  The run closed out with Bakanas lobbing a shot from quarter-tank past Macalester goalie Hannah Strauss-Albee (Fr., Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) at the 1:41 mark as Connecticut ran out to a 9-7 lead.

The Scots halved the margin before the end of the period as Ramona McCabe (So., Santa Cruz, Calif./San Lorenzo Valley) weaved through the Camels' defenders and popped a shot from the outside with 44 ticks on the clock to move Macalester to within one at 9-8 with a period to play.

Macalester pulled even with 6:08 left in regulation as Ellerton scored on a man-up chance, but the Camels closed the contest with a 3-0 run to the final horn by Hunter who scored a pair of natural goals (3:43, 1:10) and a man-up tally (1:51) for the difference.
