UTICA, N.Y. -- Wheaton College's Karalee Angus (Fr., San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) made 13 saves to earn Player of the Game honors, but Carthage College received a hat-trick from Jessica Shopiro (Sr., Buffalo Grove, Ill./Lincolnshire-Stevenson) to lead the Lady Reds to a 12-8 victory over the Thunder at the 2010 CWPA Division III Championship hosted by Utica College.
For Carthage, six players found the back of the cage with shots as Patti Blatter (Sr., Prospect Heights, Ill./Wheeling), Liza Dickinson (Sr., Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) and Mari Paraskevopoulos (So., Mount Prospect, Ill./Arlington Heights-Hersey) netted pairs of goals and Michelle Mulhall (Sr., Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) tacked on a solo score.
Leading 7-6 at the end of the third period, the Lady Reds pushed the margin to 8-6 on a backhander by Blatter from two-meters out at the 6:53 mark. Wheaton responded with an outside shot by Heather Crockett (So., San Mateo, Calif./Aragon) at 6:34 to move to within 8-7, but Shopiro lobbed a shot from the right wing (5:17) and Paraskevopoulos tipped-in a shot (4:46) to push the marign out to 10-7.
Linley Sullivan (Fr., Poway, Calif./Poway) roared down the pool to score off a counter at 1:47 to pull the Thunder within 10-8, but Dickinson converted on a man-up opportunity at 1:20 to make it 11-8 and Paraskevopoulos tacked on a sweep shot with 32 seconds left for the 12-8 final.
Crockett led Wheaton in scoring with a hat-trick, while Kathryn Sheehy (Fr., Ventura, Calif./Foothill Technology) contributed a pair of goals as the Thunder were able to stay with the Lady Reds until the final five minutes of play.
In cage, LaChee Singleton (So., Burbank, Calif./Burbank) and Christine Menzenberger (Jr., Mokena, Ill./Frankfort-Lincoln-Way East) combined for seven saves for Carthage, while Angus earned Player of the Game honors for turning away 13 shots and keeping Wheaton in the game until the closing minutes.
