Macalester Goes Nine-for-12 on Man-Up to Stop Penn State Behrend 15-6 at 2010 CWPA Division III Championship
UTICA, N.Y. -- Macalester College cashed in on nine-of-12 man-up opportunities as Sarah Ellerton (Sr., Suffield, Conn./Suffield Academy) and Catherine Flint (So., Palo Alto, Calif./Henry Gunn) combined for all 15 goals in a 15-6 victory over Pennsylvania State University-The Behrend College at the 2010 CWPA Division III
The game was a highlight reel of man-up scoring as the Scots and Behrend Lions combined for 13 advantage goals on 20 opportunities, including eight of the 12 goals in the second half coming off either penalty shots or exclusions.
A key to the game was Macalester's ability to stiffle the PSU-Behrend offense in the early going to build a 7-2 lead by halftime and make the Lions play catch-up for the remainder of the contest.
The stars of the contest were Ellerton and Flint, who netted eight and seven goals, respectively, as the Scots cruised to victory.
For her performance, Flint was named the Player of the Game following the final horn as she put home a solo marker in the first period and hat-tricks in both the second and fourth periods. Ellerton, who recorded a tournament record eight goals, chipped in a pair of markers in the first period, one in the second, four in the third and a single goal in the fourth period to account for the remainder of Macalester's scoring output.
Across the tank, Tegan Boland (Jr., Roselle, Ill./Conant) led the Lions with a pair of goals, while Kendell Duffy (So., Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills), Hilary MacManus (So., Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk), Stef Pontillo (Fr., Erie, Pa./McDowell) and MaryEllen Spooner (Fr., Springfield, Va./West Springfield) added single tallies.
In cage, Hannah Strauss-Albee (Fr., Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) recorded three saves in the victorious effort, while Jenna Zeyfang (Sr., Erie, Pa./Erie First Academy) took the loss for the Lions with five saves.
