Bakanas & Connecticut College Outlast Chatham 13-11 at 2010 CWPA Division III Championship
UTICA, N.Y. -- Phoebe Bakanas (Sr., Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) scored four times, including three times in the fourth period to account for the margin of victory, as Connecticut College held off a furious rally by Chatham University to pick up a 13-11 victory at the 2010 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championship at Utica College.
Leading 9-5 entering the fourth period, the Camels began to see their lead dwindle away as Selina Breiner (So., Moon Township, Pa./Moon) drove to the cage for a score at 6:57 and Natty Burford (So., Temeculah, Calif./Temeculah) cashed in a man-up bid at 6:11 to pull the Cougars to within 9-7. Bakanas returned the lead to three goals at 10-7 with a score off a free-throw from six meters out , but Breiner and Paige Dunlap (Jr., Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) responded with markers at 5:32 and 4:54, respectively, to move Chatham to within one at 10-9.
The Camels and Cougars traded goals over the next two minutes as Emily Hunter (So., Cheshire, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) scored on a power-play chance at 4:30, Breiner drilled a shot from outside at 4:10, Bakanas connected on an outside shot at 2:41 and Burford hit for a bomb from the wings at 2:29 to keep Chatham within a score of tying the game at 12-11.
However, the Camels' defense stiffened over the final two minutes of play to keep the Cougars at bay before Bakanas hurled a desperation heave which crossed the goal line at 1:26 for an insurance marker and the 13-11 final score.
Pamela Lovejoy (Fr., Guilford, Conn./Hopkins School) made nine saves to pick up the victory between the pipes for the Camels, while Chelsea Mummert (Jr., York, Pa./Central York) made five saves for Chatham.
