Michigan Named Women's Varsity Team of the Decade (2000-09)
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The University of Michigan can add one more achievement to its list of accomplishments over the last decade as the Wolverines were voted the "Team of the Decade" by visitors to the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) website during the week of December 14-18. The 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2009 Eastern Champion and eight-time Western Division Champion, Michigan has appeared in six of the last 10 league title games.
Over nine years since the program's first varsity season in 2001, the Wolverines hold a 248-105-1 record, including a 63-3 mark in CWPA Western Division play, as Michigan has won 20 or more games in each of the program's nine seasons under head coaches Amber Drury-Pinto (2001-02, 45-24-1, 16-0 CWPA West) and Matt Anderson (2003-present, 203-81, 47-3 CWPA West).
In division play, the Wolverines boast a 63-3 record as the team has finished first each year since 2002 after placing second in 2001.
Further, the program has never missed or placed lower than fifth at the Eastern Championship as the Wolverines have recorded fifth (2001), fourth (2007), third (2003), second (2004, 2006) and first (2002, 2005, 2008, 2009) finishes, while placing fourth (2002), fifth (2009) and sixth (2005, 2008) at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.
Anderson has been named division Coach of the Year four times and CWPA Eastern Coach of the Year on three occasions. Julie Hyrne (2006-09) and Betsey Armstrong (2002-05) combined for three Eastern Most Valuable Player honors and, joined by Shana Welch (2004-07), account for seven division MVP selections. Armstrong, the starting goalkeeper on the U.S. National Team and an Ann Arbor native, was inducted into the conference Hall of Fame in 2008.
