CWPA Ranks Among Nation's Best in Final 2009 National Men's Water Polo Varsity Statistics
National Men's Water Polo Statistics - Week 12 - Final (December 9, 2009)
BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Collegaite Water Polo Association (CWPA) fielded some of the nation's best players, including seven of the nation's Top 20 team offenses and half of the Top 10 individual scorers, this year as the final 2009 Men's Varsity Water Polo Statistics were released by the Johns Hopkins University Sports Information Office on December 9.
In the team statistics, 14 of the nation's 38 most potent scoring offenses were in the CWPA this season as Gannon University (4th, 292 goals in 25 games, 11.68 gpg), the United States Naval Academy (6th, 314 goals in 28 games, 11.21 gpg), Fordham University (8th, 323 goals in 30 games, 10.77 gpg), Johns Hopkins University (12th, 357 goals in 34 games, 10.50 gpg), Bucknell University (14th, 289 goals in 28 games, 10.32 gpg), Mercyhurst College (15th, 164 goals in 16 games, 10.25 gpg), Washington & Jefferson College (19th, 220 goals in 22 games, 10.0 gpg), Iona College (22nd, 262 goals in 27 games, 9.70 gpg), Brown University (23rd, 279 goals in 29 games, 9.62 gpg), Harvard University (29th, 213 goals in 24 games, 8.88 gpg), Princeton University (30th, 243 goals in 28 games, 8.68 gpg), George Washington University (36th, 212 goals in 28 games, 7.57 gpg), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (37th, 187 goals in 25 games, 7.48 gpg) and Pennsylvania State University-Behrend College (38th, 176 goals in 24 games, 7.33 gpg) round out the league's representation.
On defense, Navy (7th, 221 goals in 28 games, 7.89 gpg) led in the league in scoring defense, while Brown (12th, 251 goals in 29 games, 8.65 gpg), Princeton (13th, 243 goals in 28 games, 8.68 gpg), Johns Hopkins (14th, 301 goals in 34 games, 8.85 gpg), Fordham (22nd, 275 goals in 30 games, 9.17 gpg), MIT (25th, 240 goals in 25 games, 9.60 gpg), Bucknell (27th, 276 goals in 28 games, 9.86 gpg), George Washington (29th, 289 goals in 28 games, 10.32 gpg), Washington & Jefferson (30th, 232 goals in 22 games, 10.55 gpg), Gannon (32nd, 267 goals in 25 games, 10.68 gpg), Harvard (33rd, 261 goals in 24 games, 10.88 gpg), Penn State Behrend (35th, 271 goals in 24 games, 11.29 gpg) and Iona (37th, 320 goals in 27 games, 11.85 gpg) all rank among the leaders.
Individually, the CWPA dominates the leading scorers list as Iona's Joe Przekota (2nd, 91 goals in 27 games, 3.37 gpg), Brown's Svetozar Stefanovic (3rd, 81 goals in 29 games, 2.79 gpg) and Gordon Hood (10th, 69 goals in 29 games, 2.38 gpg) as well as Fordham's Mikey Edwards (7th, 72 goals in 30 games, 2.40 gpg) and Ali Arat (8th, 71 goals in 30 games, 2.37 gpg) rank among the Top 10 players in goals.
In addition, Johns Hopkins' Kyle Gertridge (13th, 67 goals in 34 games, 1.97 gpg), Mercyhurst's Alex Moggridge (14th, 66 goals in 19 games, 3.47 gpg), George Washington's John-Claude Wright (15th, 64 goals in 28 games, 2.29 gpg), Princeton's Mark Zalewski (20th, 57 goals in 28 goals, 2.04 gpg), MIT's Devin Lewis (24th, 55 goals in 25 games, 2.20 gpg) and PSU-Behrend's Ali Khan (25th, 54 goals in 24 games, 2.25 gpg) rate among the Top 25 scorers as the CWPA placed 21 players in the Top 50 this year.
In cage, nearly half of the top goalies are on East Coast teams with Mercyhurst's Andy Sekulski (3rd, 292 saves in 19 games, 15.37 spg), Johns Hopkins' Jeremy Selbst (4th, 289 saves in 39.25 games, 7.36 spg), Fordham's Christian Flessner (9th, 241 saves in 29.75 games, 8.10 spg), Brown's Kent Holland (11th, 231 saves in 29 games, 9.43 spg), George Washington's Cameron Illes (13th, 226 saves in 22.5 games, 10.04 spg), MIT's Columbus Leonard (14th, 224 saves in 23 games, 9.74 spg), Washington & Jefferson's John Todd (16th, 219 saves in 20 games, 10.95 spg), Connecticut College's Clayton Whittier (18th, 216 saves in 20 games, 10.80 spg), Bucknell's Nick Donahue (21st, 196 saves in 27 games, 7.26 spg), Princeton's Mike Merlone (22nd, 194 saves in 23 games, 8.44 spg) and Gannon's Neal Zoellick (24th, 186 saves in 25 games, 7.44 spg) ranking in the Top 25.
