Bucknell Edges Brown 8-6 in 2009 Men's Eastern Championship First Round
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Johnny Stupp (Sr., St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute) scored twice to tie with Brown's Svetozar Stefanovic (Fr., Belgrade, Serbia/Russian Embassy) for the game high as the Bucknell University Bison used a 5-0 advantage in the third period to overpower and outlast Brown University 8-6 in the opening round of the 2009 Men's Eastern Championship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The game was a story of halves as the Northern Division Champion Bears built a 4-1 lead in the first half and saw the advantage dwindle to a tie and later a loss to Bucknell, the No. 3 team out of the Southern Division.
Leading 4-1 following the first half, Brown experienced a five-goal third period by Bucknell which gave the Bison the lead for good.
Stupp started the run with a man-up score at the 7:26 mark before Sean Coghlan (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) and Howie Kalter (Jr., Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) tacked on even strength and man-up goals at 6:38 and 4:33, respectively to tie the game at 4-4.
Bucknell took the lead at the 3:08 mark as Richie Hyden (Jr., Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich), who earned Player of the Game honors for the tally, buried a man-up shot to make it 5-4 before Stupp added an advantage goal of his own for a 6-4 Bison lead after 24 minutes of play.
Brown managed to pull within a goal at 6-5 as Gordon Hood (Jr., Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) split the herd of Bison for a man-up goal to move to within 6-5, but Bucknell responded with an even strength marker by Spencer Richley (So., Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) and an advantage goal by Randy Ang (Sr., Hillsborough, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) to push the margin to 8-5 with 1:43 left on the game clock.
The Bears shaved the lead back to a pair of markers at 8-6 as Dean Serure (Fr., Coral Gables, Fla./Ransom Everglades) beat Bucknell goalie Nick Donahue (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) at 1:30, but the Bucknell defense was able to run out enough of the clock to prevent Brown from making a comeback.
In goal, Donahue earned the win with five saves, while Kent Holland (Sr., Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) recorded nine stops for the Bears.
Bucknell advances to a 6:00 p.m. showdown on Saturday, November 21 against the winner of a first round game between No. 18 Princeton University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the tournament semifinals, while Brown will meet the loser of the Princeton-MIT game at 3:00 p.m. with a berth in the fifth place game on the line.
