No. 18 Yale Uses Late Goal by Lazzarini to Overcome Columbia 6-5 at National Collegiate Club Championship
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Thomas Lazzarini (Jr., San Marino, Calif.) completed a hat-trick with two seconds left on the game clock as the No. 18-ranked Yale University Bulldogs stopped Columbia University 6-5 in the second consolation round at the National Collegiate Club Championship. Yale advances to face either Penn State or Virginia Tech in the 9th place game on November 15 at 2:15 p.m., while Yale will meet either PSU-VT at 3:30 p.m. in the 11th place game.
In a battle of Ivy League institutions, the Bulldogs opened up a 2-0 lead in the first period as Lazzarini netted an even-strength goal with a direct shot lob at 6:08 before Paul Orland (So., St. Louis, Mo.) tacked on a man-up tally at the 2:39 mark.
The teams traded goals in the second period with Columbia's Kai Golden (Fr., Hawaii, Hawaii) opening the Lions' scoring at 3:27 with a man-up goal before David Skophammer (So., Los Angeles, Calif.) responded for Yale with five seconds left in the first half for a 3-1 Bulldogs' lead at the break.
Yale expanded the margin to 4-1 with another score by Skophammer at the 2:34 mark of the third period, but Columbia dominated the fourth period to set up the dramatic last second conclusion.
The Lions began to climb back into the game a minute and a half into the final period as Will Reid (Gr., Greenwich, Conn.) buried a five-meter penalty shot at 5:24. Yale returned the margin to three goals as Lazzarini accepted and finished a crossing pass at the 4:57 mark, but Golden answered at 4:11 to pull the 'Dogs back to within a pair.
The lead dwindled to nothing as Brice Patricelli (Gr., Greenwich, Conn.) tallied an advantage goal with an inside shot at 3:09, while Robert Bennett (Sr., Claremont, Calif.) rocketed in a pass from set to even the score at 5-5 with 37 seconds left on the game clock.
Following timeouts by both programs, Yale cashed in on its final scoring chance as Lazzarini ripped a direct shot past Columbia goalie Xande Wright (Sr., Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) with two seconds on the clock for the deciding goal.
In cage, Wright finished with 14 saves for the Lions, while Daniel Kelly (Fr., Greenwich, Conn.) stopped five shots for the Bulldogs.
