No. 17 Penn State Handles Virginia Tech 6-2 to Advance to National Collegiate Club Ninth Place Game
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Kelsey Britton (Sr., North Wales, Pa.) scored twice to earn Player of the Game honors as the No. 17-nationally ranked Nittany Lions of Penn State University advanced to the ninth place game at the 2009 National Collegiate Club Championship with a 6-2 victory over Virginia Tech.
The Nittany Lions advance to face No. 18 Yale University for ninth place in the tournament in a 2:15 p.m. game on Sunday, November 15, while the Hokies will face Columbia University for 11th place in the final game of the 30-contest tournament at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Penn State never trailed in the game opening up a 2-0 lead with consecutive scores by Andrew Bauman (Jr., Erie, Pa.) and Britton with 1:35 and four seconds remaining in the first period, respectively.
Virginia Tech halved the margin with 34 seconds remaining in the second period courtesy a tally by Peter Biskaduros (Sr., Fairfax, Va.), but PSU answered 23 seconds later with a man-up tally by Corey Letts (Jr., Harleysville, Pa.) which proved to be the eventual game-winner.
The margin expanded to 4-1 to open the third period as Nate Mensch (Sr., Harleysville, Pa.) tacked on the first of three insurance goals by the Nittany Lions. Joe Dorsch (Sr., Souderton, Pa.) halved the PSU lead with 3:48 left in the period with a marker, but the Blue and White added a man-up goal by Britton and a natural goal by Mike Frasso (Sr., Mohnton, Pa.) with 6:11 and 50 seconds left in the fourth period for the 6-2 final score.
Guarding the pipes, Lane Jubb (Sr., King of Prussia, Pa.) and Bryan Focht (So., Reading, Pa.) combined for eight PSU saves, while Peter Ollis (So., Bethesda, Mass.) stopped eight shots for the Hokies.
