Navy Handles Johns Hopkins & George Washington in Southern Division Finale
WASHINGTON, D.C.
-- The No. 12-ranked Navy water polo played well in the
first half of both contests on Saturday, defeating Johns Hopkins
University, 15-10, and George Washington University, 13-11, in its
annual two-city Beltway roadtrip. The victories move Navy's record
to 17-8 overall and 6-2 in the CWPA Southern Division.
The win was Navy's sixth in a row and gave Navy a share of the CWPA
Southern Division title, entering next weekend's CWPA Southern
Division Tournament.
In the day's first game, a 15-10 victory over Johns Hopkins, the
Mids used an 8-1 second-quarter advantage to take an 11-3 halftime
lead, then coasted home in the second half for the five-goal
victory.
"We had a really nice second quarter, but not a great second half,"
said Navy head coach Mike Schofield. "We lost some
focus and Hopkins got some back. We did not do a very good job of
putting them away."
Johnny Meiners and Luke Baldwin
led Navy with four goals each. Kyle Wertz had three, Stevie
Ray tallied two and Conor Handley and
Jordan Carter had one each. Brett
Rajchel had a strong game in goal with 12 blocks and three
saves.
The second game of the day was much of the same as Navy bolted out
to a 10-5 halftime advantage, then withstood a George Washington
rally in the second half for the 13-11 triumph.
The Mids were outscored in the second half, 6-3.
"George Washington played a very good second half. They did ots of
great things and really frustrated us," said Schofield. "They gave
us a very good game, and we really struggled to get anything going
in the second half."
Kyle Wertz led the Mids with five goals, while
Ray, Kevin Bell and Meiners had a pair each.
Rajchel had seven saves for the Mids.
The Mids will find out their opponent for next weekend's Southern
Division tournament on Monday.
