Johns Hopkins Stops Washington & Jefferson 24-6 for 12th Division III Eastern Title

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Peter Sauerhoff scored a match-high six goals to help Johns Hopkins take the 2009 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Men's Water Polo Eastern Championship after defeating Washington & Jefferson 24-6 on Sunday, October 25 in the championship match at the Henry Memorial Natatorium.

The Blue Jays (13-13) scored at least 18 goals in all four matches at the tournament as Johns Hopkins outscored their opponents 88-13 during the course of the championship event.  John Barrett added five goals in the finale to rate as one of 10 different JHU players to score at least one goal in the title tilt. 

Johns Hopkins earned its second-straight CWPA Division III Eastern title after electing not to compete for the 2007 title.  The Blue Jays have won five of the last six titles and recorded its 12th overall crown since the tournament started in 1991. 

Washington & Jefferson finished second in the championship tournament for the second time in history as the Presidents last advanced to the title game in 2007, falling to Massachusetts Institute of Technology 20-10.

The Blue Jays rushed out to an 8-3 lead after one period and then added 15 consecutive goals to raise its lead to 20 markers at 23-3 early in the fourth quarter. 

W&J (8-9) was led by senior Steve Hilty's (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) hat trick.  Junior Bill Krause (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon), sophomore Andy Rish (North East, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and freshman Alex Shuey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) all notched one goal for the Presidents. 

Senior goalie John Todd (Joppa, Md./Calvert Hall) finished with 11 saves.

In the third place game, Connecticut College held off Penn State University-Erie, The Behrend College 19-14.
