This is Howie Do It: No. 17 Bucknell Stops George Washington 19-13 in CWPA Southern Division Competition
WASHINGTON, D.C.
-- The 17th-ranked Bucknell men’s water polo team
played a rare Thursday evening game and came away victorious,
defeating league rival George Washington in a high-scoring 19-13
affair. The Bison were led by Howie Kalter (Durham,
N.H./Phillips Academy Andover), who registered a
career-high six goals, while goalie Nick Donahue (Brooklyn,
N.Y./Lawrenceville) stopped a career-high 17 shots in the
winning effort.
Trailing 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, Bucknell
exploded for 13 goals in the middle two periods and cruised to the
six-goal win, its third over the Colonials this season. In those
three contests the Bison have outscored George Washington (7-15,
0-3 CWPA Southern Division) 48-27.
Bucknell’s goal total was its most since it
registered 21 against Queens in 2004, and the 32 combined goals
were the most in a Bison game since a victory over Slippery Rock in
2000 by the same 19-13 margin.
Donahue had an outstanding game in goal with his
career-high 17 saves. It marked the most stops for a Bucknell
goalie since Trevor Mullins’ 17 saves opposite Johns Hopkins
in 2004. Remarkably, Donahue only played the first 28 minutes
before Matt Napleton (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick)
relieved him in the middle of the fourth quarter.
Kalter, whose previous career high for goals had been
four, was one of eight Bison goal scorers in the game. He and
Sean Coghlan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice), who
registered a career high of his own with five goals, combined for
11 of Bucknell’s 19 scores.
Coghlan (5g, 1a), Kalter (6g) and Richie Hyden
(Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) each had six
points in the contest as Hyden scored only one goal, but dished out
a career-high five assists. The junior now has 108 career assists,
17 shy of 10th place in program history. Overall, Bucknell (11-6,
5-1 CWPA) recorded 18 assists on its 19 goals.
Bucknell, which is tied for 17th in the latest national
rankings with Navy, has now won seven of its last eight games.
The Bison played the Colonials on Thursday because they will be
flying to California Friday to compete in the UCI Invitational this
weekend in Irvine, Calif.
