Brown's Svetozar Stefanovic Earns September 21 Varsity Northern Division Rookie of the Week Honors
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Brown University utility player Svetozar Stefanovic (Fr., Belgrade, Serbia/Russian Embassy) tallied 13 goals with four assists, five steals and 10 ejections drawn, including a season-high seven goals versus No. 20 Johns Hopkins University, to lead the Bears to fourth place at the 2009 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship and earn the September 21 Northern Division Rookie of the Week award.
Against Massachusetts Insitute of Technology in Brown's opening game, he pumped in four goals and two assists to key the Bears to an 8-4 victory. He followed up the performance with a pair of goals versus No. 20 Princeton University (10-8 L) before rifling home seven goals while collecting four steals and drawing seven ejections against No. 20 Johns Hopkins in a 13-12 loss to help Brown to a fourth place finish.
The placement marks Brown's highest finish at ECACs since recording a fourth place mark in the 2003 championship hosted by the Bears.
Overall, the Rookie of the Week award marks the third-consecutive honor received by Stefanovic from the Collegiate Water Polo Association this year as he previously garnered the September 7 Northern Rookie of the Week and September 14 Northern Division Player of the Week awards. In the history of the conference, he becomes the first student-athlete (male or female) to earn recognition from the league in their first three weeks of collegiate competition.
