Johns Hopkins' Alex Whittam Named September 14 Varsity Southern Division Rookie of the Week

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Johns Hopkins University freshman Alex Whittam (Hillsborough, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) registered 10 goals, four assists, three steals, 10 ejections drawn and three field blocks to lead the Blue Jays to a 3-2 week and earn the September 14 Varsity Southern Division Rookie of the Week award.

It marks Whittam's first accolade from the Collegiate Water Polo Association in his career, and the first for JHU this season.

Facing two nationally-ranked opponents and three Collegiate Water Polo Northern Division foes, the Blue Jays, who are ranked No. 1 in the latest Division III National Poll, fell to No. 13 University of California-San Diego (9-7 L) at the United States Naval Academy on September 11 before finishing 3-1 at the Princeton Invitational with wins over Iona College (13-7 W), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (12-7 W) and Fordham University (11-8 W).  JHUs only loss at Princeton came against No. 4-ranked University of California-Los Angeles (14-7 L), as the Bruins held off the Blue Jays to avoid the upset.

Whittam contributed in all five games for Hopkins last week tallying two steals with two ejections drawn against UC-San Diego at Navy, before contributing a hat-trick in the win over Iona while drawing three ejections.

Versus MIT, he led the Blue Jays with four goals, two assists, two ejections drawn and a block.  He posted a goal and two assists with an ejection drawn and a field block against UCLA before chipping in a goal with a steal, ejection drawn and block against Fordham.
