No. 17 Navy Shocks No. 13 UC-San Diego 11-10 in Sudden Death Overtime

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Sophomore Stevie Ray buried an eight-yard shot in the sudden-victory, second-overtime session to lift the 17th-ranked Navy water polo team to an 11-10 victory over 13th-ranked UC-San Diego The win moves Navy's overall record to 6-4.

"That was a great game, and we really appreciate all of the fans from Navy and UCSD who came to see it," said Navy head coach Mike Schofield. "Both teams came back from being down several times. We had things really going our way in the third quarter until our guys made some poor decisions and a couple of effort letdowns, the Tritons made us pay in a big way."

Navy led 3-2 after one quarter and 4-2 at halftime, before the Tritons rallied to tie the game at seven after three quarters. The two teams were deadlocked at nine heading into overtime, where each team scored once, setting up Ray's heroics in the second overtime session.

"After the third quarter, it was just two teams working really hard to close out the game," added Schofield. "Fortunately, Stevie stepped up and buried the last shot. UCSD will win a lot of games in their conference this year, and we can't thank them enough for making the trip East."

The Mids got a breakout game from Ray, who scored a career-high five goals. Ray entered the season with no career goals, but already has 14 goals this season. Kyle Wertz and Johnny Meiners scored a pair each, and Kevin Bell and Conor Handley tallied one goal each. Brett Rajchel stopped 10 shots in goal to earn the victory.

"We got good contributions from a lot of guys, particularly Luke Baldwin, Conor Handley and Johnny Meiners," said Schofield. "Handley kept us in the game late with his speed, running down a breakaway that would have ended things."

Navy will be in action next weekend in the ECAC Championships, which start Saturday at Princeton.
