Moggridge Scores Six as Mercyhurst Handles Gannon 9-6 for 2009 Division II Eastern Championship

ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst College men's water polo team claimed its third-straight Division II Eastern Championship Saturday afternoon, as the Lakers pushed past host Gannon University 9-6 at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion.

Junior Alex Moggridge led the offense with six goals on eight attempts while classmate Andy Sekulski recorded 15 saves and surrendered just six goals to the Lakers' cross-town rival.

Mercyhurst became the first team to win three titles in a row by using a solid offensive attack and stifling second-half defense. The Lakers built a 3-2 lead in first before expanding that mark to 5-4 heading into halftime. The defining point of the game came in the second half as the three-time champs held Gannon to two goals while contributing four of their own.

The Lakers, standing at 3-2 now thanks to back-to-back to wins today, will face Erie-based Penn State Behrend on Saturday, Sept. 19 in an 11 a.m. contest at the Mercyhurst Aquatics Center.
