George Washington's Cameron Illes Named September 7 Varsity Southern Division Rookie of the Week
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- George Washington University freshman goalie Cameron Illes (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) blocked 26 saves, including a five-meter penalty shot, and added three steals and two assists in four games for the Colonials to earn the September 7 Southern Division Rookie of the Week award.
He is the first GW player to earn the honor since Cray Rogers on September 22, 2008.
Competing at the Navy Open on the campus of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., GW finished 2-2 on the weekend defeating Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) foes Mercyhurst College (8-6 W) and Queens College (N.Y.) (10-6 W) in non-conference action, while falling to Concordia University (Calif.) (18-6 L) and No. 2-nationallyl ranked Stanford University (17-2 L).
Overall, Illes made 11 saves against Queens, including a penalty shot, to help the Colonials, while chippiNational Interscholastic Swim Coaches Associationng in six saves in two quarters against Stanford, four saves versus Mercyhurst and five stops against Concordia.
A standout high school player, he earned National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA) Second Team All-America honors and was a four-time Pennsylvania All-State selection at North Allegheny High School. Further, he helped North Allegheny win the Western Division and place fifth in state tournament as a senior team captain last year.
