Mercyhurst's Andrew Schonhoff Signs With New Zealand Team

ERIE, Pa. - Mercyhurst College men's water polo head coach Curtis Robinette announced this week that recent graduate Andrew Schonhoff (St. Louis, Missouri/DeSmet) has signed a contract with the New Zealand-based Maranui Water Polo Club and will join the team in October for training.

"I'm very excited Andrew has this opportunity to play professional water polo," Robinette said. "All his hard work he put into his college career has paid off. Hopefully this will have an immediate impact on recruiting, both in the U.S. and Internationally."

A two-time All-Southern Division selection with first team honors in 2008 and second team honors in 2007, Schonhoff appeared in a 25 games for Mercyhurst last season, finishing second on the squad in goals (58) and assists (16).  He also posted 21 steals and drew 68 ejections from his two-meter position as he concluded the season as the Division II Player of the Year.  He finished his career as the Lakers leader in goals (205) to become the only Mercyhurst men's water polo to collect over 200 in a career.  The 2007 and 2008 Division II Eastern Championship Most Valuable Player, he also ranks third on the all-time assists list with 68.

Maranui Water Polo Club, governed by New Zealand Water Polo, is based out of Wellington, New Zealand, and competes against seven other teams located throughout New Zealand.
