Mercyhurst's Andrew Schonhoff Signs With New Zealand Team
ERIE, Pa. -
Mercyhurst College men's water polo head coach Curtis Robinette
announced this week that recent graduate Andrew Schonhoff
(St. Louis, Missouri/DeSmet) has signed a contract with
the New Zealand-based Maranui Water Polo Club and will join the
team in October for training.
"I'm very excited Andrew has this opportunity to play professional
water polo," Robinette said. "All his hard work he put into his
college career has paid off. Hopefully this will have an immediate
impact on recruiting, both in the U.S. and Internationally."
A two-time All-Southern Division selection with first team honors
in 2008 and second team honors in 2007, Schonhoff appeared in a 25
games for Mercyhurst last season, finishing second on the squad in
goals (58) and assists (16). He also posted 21 steals and
drew 68 ejections from his two-meter position as he concluded the
season as the Division II Player of the Year. He finished his
career as the Lakers leader in goals (205) to become the only
Mercyhurst men's water polo to collect over 200 in a career.
The 2007 and 2008 Division II Eastern Championship Most Valuable
Player, he also ranks third on the all-time assists list with
68.
Maranui Water Polo Club, governed by New Zealand Water Polo, is
based out of Wellington, New Zealand, and competes against seven
other teams located throughout New Zealand. All seven teams begin
training in October, less than four months prior to their regular
