Kelly, Robertson & Reitz Tabbed 2010 University of Michigan Captains
ANN ARBOR, Mich.
-- Seniors Casie Kelly (Longwood, Fla./Lake
Brantley) and Leah Robertson (Newport Beach,
Calif./Newport Harbor) and junior Cara Reitz
(Miami, Fla./Gulliver) will represent the University of
Michigan water polo team as captains for the program's 10th season,
head coach Matt Anderson announced earlier this week.
"The three of them combined are going to provide very strong
leadership," Anderson said. "They each have their areas of strength
that complement each other very well. It is a good mix of in and
out of the water leadership. I am looking forward to continuing the
tradition of strong captains leading the Michigan program to
success both character-wise out of the pool and athletically in the
pool."
Kelly is coming off one of her best seasons in the Maize and Blue.
The scrappy driver established career highs in games played (36)
and steals (13) and matched a personal best in assists (10) during
her junior season. Kelly has tallied 58 points in 91 career games,
with her 50th point coming against Mercyhurst on March 13 last
season.
A two-time All-America selection, Robertson is the program leader
in steals, needing one more to record 300 career thefts. She led
the 2008 squad with 69 steals and ranked second on the team in
assists (31), third in points (72) and fourth in goals (41). She
helped guide the Wolverines to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA
Championship, becoming the first player in program history to earn
repeat NCAA All-Tournament selections. She has twice earned first
team nods to the CWPA All-Division and the CWPA Eastern
Championship All-Tournament team.
Reitz has found success in and out of the pool in her first two
seasons at Michigan. A two-time CWPA Scholar-Athlete, Reitz
finished third on the team in steals with a career-high 40 thefts.
Despite battling a hand injury through much of the postseason, she
scored one of the biggest goals of the season in the NCAA
Championship fifth-place game on May 10. Reitz followed her own
five-meter penalty toss and rifled in the rebound to tie the game
at 7-7 en route to the historic U-M victory over No. 9 Loyola
Marymount.
The Wolverines are coming off back-to-back NCAA Championship
appearances and their eighth consecutive CWPA division crown.
