Armstrong & Knox to Clash in FINA World League Super Final Title Game
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Betsey Armstrong of Team USA and Bronwen Knox of Team Australia helped their teams knock off Greece and Russia, respectively, to place the Americans and Aussies in the title game of the 2010 FINA World League Super Final in La Jolla, Calif.
The game, set for 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 3, will be a rematch of an earlier match-up in which the United States held off Australia 15-14 in a shootout. Knox recorded a hat-trick in the contest for the Aussies, while Armstrong did not play.
A Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Hall of Fame inductee and a former University of Michigan Wolverine, Armstrong tallied 12 saves in a 9-7 victory over Greece as the Americans opened up a 5-1 first half lead and cruised to victory.
In previous action at the tournament, she posted seven saves in a 7-4 victory over Canada and 13 stops in a 11-9 defeat of Greece as she has garnered 32 saves in three games.
For Knox, the former Hartwick College Hawk and two-time All-America selection scored twice as the Australians downed Russia 8-7.
The Aussies took an early lead, going ahead 1-0 on their first possession of the game on an extra-man score by Knox, but Russia fought back and managed a 3-1 lead early in the second quarter before the Aussies rallied down the stretch for the victory.
Following a 12-8 victory Russia, a 14-13 shootout loss to the U.S.and a 10-7 victory over the Netherlands, she now has nine goals in four games.
The U.S. and Australia will meet for the title at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 3.
