Mercyhurst Names Four Men's Water Polo Players 2009-10 Scholar-Athletes

ERIE, Pa. -- Mercyhurst College recently announced the selection of 324 student-athletes, including four men's water polo players, as Mercyhurst Scholar-Athletes for the 2009-10 academic year.

Alex Moggridge (Jr., Ottawa, Ontario/Nepean), Andrew Sekulski (Jr., Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin), Ian Tasman (Fr., Orlando, Fla./Winter Park) and William Page (Fr., St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University) all earned honors as student-athletes named to the annual scholar-athlete list must own a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. This year’s total represents 62 percent of the 526 total student-athletes involved in 24 varsity sports at Mercyhurst College.

"The dedication that our student-athletes demonstrate in the classroom is evident in these numbers," said athletics director Joe Kimball. "In addition to the success that Mercyhurst has had in intercollegiate competition, these student-athletes have proven that the classroom is just as important a venue."

Among the four selections, Moggridge and Sekulski picked up additional honors following a 2009 season in which both garnered All-America accolades.

Moggridge earned his second-straight All-America honor after leading the Lakers in scoring. He tallied 66 goals and added 39 assists for 105 points to accompany 56 steals, five field blocks and 16 drawn ejections through 18 games. Following the season he was named to the Collegiate Water Polo Association South Division Second Team.

Sekulski joined Moggridge as a repeat All-America honoree, earning it in each of the two previous seasons at the goaltender position. Through 19 games, Sekulski accumulated a 13-6 record with 292 saves and 50 steals. He also added two goals and 22 assists for 24 points.

Page concluded his freshman season with 37 goals, 20 assists, 57 points, 39 steals, eight field blocks and a team-high 29 drawn ejections in 19 games, while Tasman tacked on 22 goals, a team high 40 assists, 62 points, a team high 69 steals and 15 field blocks along with 12 drawn ejections.

Mercyhurst finished its season with a 13-6 record, marking its fourth-straight winning season and fourth-consecutive 10-win season.
