CWPA Alums Shine on Day 1 of 2010 FINA World League Super Final
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Hartwick College standout Bronwen Knox of the Australian National Team and Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Hall of Fame inductee/University of Michigan alum Betsey Armstrong of the United States of America National Team led their respective squads to victory on Day 1 of the 2010 FINA World League Super Final in La Jolla, Calif.
Knox tallied two goals in a 12-8 win by the Aussies over the Russian National Team in the second contest of the tournament. Leading 2-1 with 4:51 left in the first period, the Australians opened the margin to 5-1 by the end of the period as Knox buried natural goals at the 3:39 and 15 second marks to give the Aussies a nearly insurmountable lead in rolling to the four goal win.
For Team USA, Armstong finished with 13 saves as the Red, White & Blue downed Greece 11-9. Overall, she posted four saves in the first, five in the second, two in the third and two in the fourth period while holding Greece at bay down the stretch to preserve the victory.
The two CWPA veterans will clash this evening as Team USA and Team Australia will meet at 7:00 p.m. PST in the second of three preliminary round games. On Wednesday, June 30, the USA will meet Russia at 7:00 p.m., while the Aussies will meet the Netherlands at 2:30 p.m.
