Washington & Jefferson's Jessica Barby Named 2010 CWPA Women's Varsity Scholar-Athlete of the Year
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. --The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) announces the selection of Washington & Jefferson graduate Jessica Barby (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) as the recipient of the 2010 Women's Varsity Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.
The highest honor bestowed by the league to an active player, matched only by the induction of a former player to the league's Hall of Fame, the award recognizes an outstanding senior student-athlete who has achieved success in both the scholastic (3.25 or higher cumulative grade point average) and athletic arenas while possessing a spirit which provides service to the community.
Athletes were nominated by their respective Department of Athletics with each CWPA institution eligible to nominate a female student-athlete for the award with the recipient being selected based on a points system derived from Community Service, CWPA Academic Honors, Scholastic Achievement and All-Conference/All-Eastern Tournament selections over their career.
Barby's selection marks the second time the award has been presented by the league as Bucknell University's Aubrey Rowe garnered the 2009 award.
Named to the ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Directors (CoSIDA) College Division Women’s At-Large Academic All-America First Team last week for her second Academic All-America nod in the past two seasons she made history by becoming the first Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) women's student-athlete to earn back-to-back Academic All-America honors following Third Team honors in 2009.
Barby graduated from W&J on May 22 with a degree in child development education. She finished with a 3.96 grade-point average.
She enjoyed a record-breaking senior year as she became Washington & Jefferson’s single-season goal scoring leader after firing in 69 goals this spring. She also added 21 assists for 90 total points.
Following the season, Barby was selected to the CWPA All-Conference Division III First Team. She was also named the April 16 CWPA Co-Player of the Week after a career-high, eight-goal performance against Penn State-Behrend at the CWPA Tournament (Apr. 10-11) in New London, Conn.
During her career, Washington & Jefferson recorded 37 victories and made a pair of Collegiate III Tournament appearances. Under her leadership, the 2009 Presidents set a school record with 11 victories. Barby ended her career with 144 goals and 87 assists for 231 career points. She also recorded 56 career steals.
In addition to her athletic achievements, she contributed over 50 hours of community service during the 2009-10 academic year while earning three consecutive CWPA and Association of Collegiate Water Polo Association (ACWPC) Academic awards, with her fourth honor slated to be announced later this summer.
