Brown's Kent Holland Named Third Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Brown University goalie Kent Holland (Sr., Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America University Division At-Large Third Team. He is one of two Collegiate Water Polo Association varsity men's players honored by CoSIDA this year joining Johns Hopkins University goalie Jeremy Selbst who earned College Division Third Team honors.
In the history of the league, Holland is the first Brown Unviersity water polo player (men or/women) and the 13th CWPA male student-athlete to earn Academic All-America accolades.
A Second Team All-East selection and First Team All-Northern Division honoree, Holland saw action in 29 games and earned a 15-12 overall record in helping the Bears to the 2009 Northern Division Championship, the Bears first since 1993. He had a 8.94 goals-against average and recorded 231 saves for a .513 save percentage. His 9.43 saves per game ranked 11th in the country, and he currently holds the Brown record for saves in a season (290 in 2008) and also in a career (946). He also received Academic All-Ivy honors in the fall and was recognized with Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-America honorable mention notice.
He completed his studies at Brown with a degree in Commerce, Organizations and Entrepeneurship and held a 3.83 GPA at the time of his nomination.
Overall, he is the only varsity men's water polo player in the nation selected to the University Division Academic All-America squad and one of three water polo student-athletes named to either the University or College Division teams, joining Selbst and the University of Redland's Ryan Floersch.
The CoSIDA Men's At-Large Team is comprised of student-athletes in fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling to mark the largest Academic All-America division in the program.
