May Named University of Michigan Big Ten Conference Outstanding Sportsmanship Award Winner
PARK RIDGE, Ill.
-- The Big Ten Conference office has announced the
selection of fifth-year senior Brittany May (Santa Barbara,
Calif./Santa Barbara) of women's water polo as the
University of Michigan female Big Ten Conference Outstanding
Sportsmanship Award winner for the 2009-10 academic year.
One member of each varsity sports team across all 11 Big Ten
schools were chosen by the institution as a Sportsmanship Award
nominee. Two outstanding sportsmanship award winners from each
conference school were selected -- one male and one female. All of
the sportsmanship award honorees have distinguished themselves
through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these
student-athletes must be in good academic standing and must have
demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition
setting. Jung and May were selected to be among the 22
student-athletes to receive the award from a conference-wide group
of 276.
A two-time CWPA All-Western Division first team selection, May saw
her senior season limited to just 18 games due to an injury
sustained in the first week of the season. While rehabbing, May
took an active role in the development of sophomore Morgan
Turner (Mission Viejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills) and her
ultimate replacement, and all-division first team honoree, freshman
Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado). May, one
of two goalies in program history to reach the 50-win plateau,
capped her playing career with a nine-save performance in relief at
the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship
against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on May 14. She went 5-3 with a 6.85
goals-against average while being held to nine starts in her senior
season.
