Brown University Announces Class of 2014 Men's Water Polo Recruits
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Brown University men's water polo coach Felix Mercado recently announced the Bears' incoming class of 2014. The following seven incoming freshmen will look to help the Bears improve on the program's 17-12 record from last fall.
"I'm very excited to add these student-athletes to our program," said Mercado. "Without a doubt they will make an immediate impact and continue to build the success of the program."
James McNamara is a 6'-3" right-handed attacker from Los Angeles, Calif., and Harvard Westlake School. McNamara was selected to the 2009-2010 USA Junior National Training Team as well as the ODP Coastal Zone Junior Team 2009-2010. He was selected onto the CIF Division I first team as well as the 2009 High School All-Southern California Team. McNamara was named the 2009 Daily News Player of the year. He currently plays for Los Angeles Water Polo Club team.
Walker Shockley is a 6'-2" goalkeeper from Diamond Bar, Calif., and attended Damien High School. Shockley was named first team All-League as a junior and was named Sierra League MVP as a senior. He is a two-time All-CIF Division III selection, as well as All-Area Player of the Year. Shockley plays for CHAWP water polo club and has led the program to various top three finishes in National tournaments.
Grant Villeneuve is a 5'-10" right-handed attacker from Atherton, Calif., who attended Deerfield Academy. Grant is a three-time NEPSAC first team member who helped lead his team to two New England Championships. He was also voted team MVP in 2009. Grant plays for the Stanford water polo club team in the summers, and prior to Deerfield attended Sacred Heart Prep.
Steven Chizen is a 6'-1" left-handed attacker from Los Altos, Calif., and attended Mountain View High School. Chizen was named first team All-League, All-CCS and All-San Jose Mercury in 2008 and 2009. Steven helped lead Mountain View to the CCS Quarter Finals. He plays his club water polo for West Valley Water Polo Club.
Chris Culin is a 6'-2" right-handed attacker from Cincinnati, Ohio and Sycamore High School. He is a two-time team MVP and was named to the All-tournament team of the Ohio Cup. Chris was also selected to the Ohio All-State second team as a senior.
Eric Robb is a 5'-10" left-handed attacker from Winnetka, Ill. and New Trier High School. Robb was an important part of the New Trier Water Polo program that won the 2010 Central Suburban League Championship and advanced to the Sectional Final Championship game. He was named Illpolo.com Honorable Mention. Currently, Robb plays for North Beach Water Polo Club.
Mario Vega is a 5'-11" right-handed attacker from Foothill High School in Santa Ana, Calif. Vega earned a starting position as a senior and also won the team's Defensive Player of the Year.
