Connecticut College's Phoebe Bakanas Named Third Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Connecticut College's Phoebe Bakanas (Sr., Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District I At-Large Third Team.
Bakanas is making her second straight appearance on the District I squad after earning Third Team honors during the 2008-09 academic year.
A Dean’s High Honors student and member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Spring All-Academic Team, Bakanas graduated with a degree in music technology and computer science.
During commencement weekend, Bakanas was honored with the College’s Brown/Brooks Award. Established by the Connecticut College Class of 1984, the Award is given to the outstanding male and female student-athletes who best represent the graduating class in scholarship, leadership and sportsmanship. The award is named after its first recipients, Tammy Brown '84 and Jim Brooks '84.
A two-year captain for the Camels, Bakanas helped change the direction of the program as a leader and educator to her teammates and as an explosive scoring threat for a young squad. Bakanas netted 48 goals this spring as the improved Camels finish with a winning record of 8-6. In four years of competition, Bakanas netted 167 goals.
A two-time All-Conference selection earning second team honors on the All-North (2009) and Division III (2010) teams, she led the Camels to a fifth place finish at the 2010 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championship while earning first team accolades on the Division III Championship All-Tournament squad.
An accomplished musician, Bakanas recently received the Sarah Nichols ‘46 Award. The award is presented to a music major that makes the greatest contribution to the musical life of the campus. Bakanas has also been recognized by the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology with the Smalley/Zahler Award.
On campus, Bakanas served as a head resident of a campus dormitory, supervising and counseling 70 student residents.
She is one of five CWPA women's varsity student-athletes named to an All-District team joining District II College Division Third Team selection Colleen Harriger of Gannon University and First Team pick Jessica Barby of Washington & Jefferson College, District II University Division Second Team honoree Marissa Stamler of George Washington University and District V University Division First Team recipient Kelsey Campbell of Indiana University.
The District I region includes Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Quebec. Athletes named to the first team qualify for the national ballot. To be nominated for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 or higher cumulative grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve.
The At-Large Team is comprised of female athletes in bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo to mark the largest Academic All-America division in the program.
