W&J's Jessica Barby Named First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson's Jessica Barby (Sr., Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District II At-Large First Team. She will now go on the ballot for national Academic All-America honors. The ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America At-Large Team is due to be announced on June 8.
A 2009
CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Third Team
selection, she could become the 11th President in school history to
earn two Academic All-America awards.
Barby boasts a 3.95 grade-point average as a child development and education major. She produced the top goal scoring season by a women's water polo player this spring with 69 goals. She added 21 assists for 90 points.
A Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III All-Conference First Team selection, she earned the league's Player of the Week award on April 12th. During her career, Washington & Jefferson recorded 37 victories and made a pair of Collegiate III Tournament appearances. Barby finished her career with 144 goals and 87 assists for 231 career points. She also recorded 56 steals.
She is one of five CWPA women's varsity student-athletes named to an All-District team joining District II College Division Third Team selection Colleen Harriger of Gannon University, District I College Division Third Team pick Phoebe Bakanas of Connecticut College, District II University Division Second Team honoree Marissa Stamler of George Washington University and District V University Division First Team recipient Kelsey Campbell of Indiana University.
The District II region includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Athletes named to the first team qualify for the national ballot. To be nominated for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 or higher cumulative grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve.
The At-Large Team is comprised of female athletes in bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo to mark the largest Academic All-America division in the program.
