Grove City Splits Versus Wheaton & Occidental at 2010 Collegiate III National Championship Tournament

KENOSHA, Wisc. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team opened play in the Collegiate III National Championships by going 1-1 in a pair of matches at Carthage College's Koenitzer Aquatic Center. The second-seeded Wolverines opened round-robin play with a 10-4 win over No. 5 Wheaton College (Ill.). In the Wolverines' second match, top-seeded Occidental College topped Grove City, 11-3.

Sophomore Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) pumped in five goals in the victory over Wheaton while junior Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and senior Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) both scored twice. Senior Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) also scored for the Wolverines. Baur and Thompson both assisted on goals in the victory.

Defensively, Stiebler tallied a match-high five steals. In goal, freshman Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) recorded 11 saves.

Occidental jumped out to a 9-0 lead by halftime in Friday's second match. Baur, Johnson and Stiebler all scored once. Thompson and sophomore Amanda Brush (Charlton, N.Y./Schenectady Christian) each recorded assists.

Johnston stopped seven shots against Occidental.
