Two-Time All-America Kate Chambers Leads 2010 Hartwick Hall of Fame Class
ONEONAT, N.Y. -- Two-time water polo All-America selection Kate Chambers will head a group of eight inductees into the Hartwick College Athletic Hall of Fame on June 12.
Hartwick's Class of 2010 also includes swimmer Gayle Gregory (2004 graduate); football player Ryan Soule (2003); lacrosse player Ross Pino (2002); runner Shawn Martin (1991); administrator Betty Powell (1982); soccer player Keith Van Eron (1977); and three-sport standout Jack McCormack (1961).
This year's inductions will bring Hartwick's hall membership to 121.
The following is a closer look at the inductees:
Kate Chambers
The Wellington, New Zealand native ranks second in Hartwick history in assists (202), points (399) and steals (218), and fourth in goals (197). Chambers twice earned American Water Polo Coaches Association All-American honors. She also was a two-time Eastern Championship First Team All-Star and a CWPA Northern Division All-Star three times.
Hartwick went 112-38 with Chambers in uniform, including four Northern Division titles, an Eastern crown and one appearance in the NCAA tournament. She helped the Hawks place fourth in the 2004 NCAA tournament, earning Second Team all-tournament honors. In 2005, Chambers was named the NCAA Woman of the Year in New York. She also helped New Zealand's junior team to a sixth-place finish at the FINA Junior World Championships in 2001.
Gayle Gregory
A three-time All-American, Gregory holds 11 women's swimming records at Hartwick. Her 11th-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke at the 2003 NCAA championships earned her All-America honors. The following season, Gregory placed eighth in the same event at nationals and received All-America status for a 13th-place finish in the 1,650 free.
Gregory holds Hartwick records in the 200 free (1:54.41); the 500 free (5:04.59); the 1,000 free (10:37.34); the 1,650 free (17:34.99); the 100 individual medley (1:02.34); the 50 backstroke (27.87); the 400 free (3:36.77); and the 800 free (7:54.98). She won nine New York state titles and earned 21 All-Empire 8 Conference honors over four seasons.
Ryan Soule
As a senior, Soule led NCAA Division III receivers in yards per game (155.0) and finished second in all-purpose yards per game (220.0). He also finished fifth in points per game (13.2); 13th in receptions per game (7.6); and 15th in punt-return average (14.6).
Soule, a Spencer-Van Etten graduate, is Hartwick's all-time leader in receiving yards (3,358) and kickoff-return yards (2,140). He also ranks in second in school history in receptions (179) and third in all-purpose yards (5,765). Soule made the Football Gazette and the American Football Coaches Association first teams and was an Associated Press second-teamer during his time at Hartwick. He helped the Hawks to three ECAC Bowl games, including the 2002 North Atlantic Bowl Championship. He also played baseball and ran track.
Ross Pino
From 1999-2002, Pino averaged 32 goals and 25 assists. He holds the program's all-time points record at 227. The three-time E8 All-Star led the Hawks in goals and points as a freshman, sophomore and senior.
Pino scored 35 goals and assisted on 40 others as a senior, ranking first in the E8 in points per game and fourth nationally in helping Hartwick to a 9-5 record. He was a 2002 ECAC Upstate All-Star, an All-American honorable mention and a USILA North/South All-Star game selection. His 127 goals and 100 assists all-time rank third and fourth, respectively, at Hartwick.
Shawn Martin
Martin still holds Hartwick indoor track records in the 1,000 meters (2:30.90) and the 5,000 (15:38.80). He also was part of a record-setting 6,400 relay team (18:34.71). In outdoor track, Martin ran legs of the 3,200 and distance-medley relay teams that hold school records. After placing third in the state in the 3,000 steeplechase as a sophomore and junior, Martin won the title in 1991, when he placed eighth in the NCAA Division III meet to earn All-American honors.
In cross country, he earned First Team all-state honors and placed 10th at the 1990 regionals.
Betty Powell
Powell has held various posts since 1969. She earned a business-management degree from Hartwick in 1982, graduating summa cum laude. From 1989-2003, Powell served as Hartwick's assistant athletic director. The next three years, she was the school's acting athletic director. Since 2006, she's served as associate athletic director.
Keith Van Eron
Van Eron helped Hartwick men's soccer to four straight NCAA tournaments from 1973-76, including two third-place finishes. As a sophomore, he played 12 games in goal, with a 0.88 goals-against average. Van Eron helped Hartwick to an unbeaten regular season as a senior, shutting out 10 of 18 opponents en route to Third Team All-American honors.
Van Eron went on to play one season in the American Soccer League, three in the North American Soccer League and 11 in the Major Indoor Soccer League. He helped the Baltimore Blast to the 1984 MISL championship and earned Goalkeeper of the Year in 1986. In 2008, he was inducted into the Baltimore Blast Hall of Fame.
Jack McCormack
McCormack earned four letters in soccer, three in basketball and three baseball during the late 1950s and early 1960s. He also captained the soccer and basketball teams. A 1959 all-state soccer pick, McCormack set a school record with 16 goals in helping Hartwick to an 8-1 record. He graduated with 29 goals.
As a senior on the basketball team, McCormack averaged 18.1 points as Hartwick went 14-4.
He also hit better than .350 for the baseball team as a senior.
