No. 7 Michigan Overpowers Gannon 17-3 in Western Division Semifinals
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan water polo team knocked off Gannon University, 17-3, in the semifinal round of the CWPA Western Division Championship on Saturday morning (April 24) inside Canham Natatorium. The top-seeded Wolverines look to capture their ninth straight division title when they face No. 2-seed and No. 15-ranked Indiana University, an 11-1 victor over Mercyhurst College, at 5 p.m. tonight. Junior Sarah Roberts (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor) tallied four goals as part of a five-point game to pace the Wolverines. Sophomore Claire Ivry (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) had a playmaker (three assists) to go with a goal and senior Leah Robertson (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) scored three first-period markers.
Freshman Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) got the win, making two saves in the first half. Fifth-year senior Brittany May (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) and sophomore Morgan Turner (Mission Viejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills) split the second half, making three and four saves, respectively.
Michigan's power play was clicking in the first period, converting three times as the Wolverines took a 6-1 lead. Robertson completed her hat trick on a counter attack midway through the frame.
In the second frame, Roberts netted three markers while completely submersed in water except for her shooting arm, helping U-M hold a decisive 10-1 lead at halftime.
Ivry dominated the second half, winning both sprints and tallying all four of her points. Turner was busy in the fourth period, making four saves as the Wolverines protected a 14-2 lead through the final eight minutes.
