Brown Earns Bid to Eastern Championship with 14-10 Victory over Harvard
NORTON, Mass. -- Senior Sarah Glick tallied six goals and senior goalkeeper Stephanie Laing picked up seven saves to help lead the Brown University women's water polo team to a dominating 14-10 senior day win against Harvard University at Wheaton College.
The game was played at Wheaton College as Brown's pool continues to be undergoing repairs. Further, the victory gives the Bears an automatic berth to the 2010 Eastern Championship on April 30-May 2 at the University of the Maryland. Although the Bears and Crimson both finish 1-3 in the Northern Division, the Bears clinch the No. 2 spot in the final division standings due to goal differential in games between Brown and Harvard.
Overall, Harvard defeated Brown 7-6 in overtime earlier this year, but Brown holds a +3 goal differential due to the four-goal victory today against the Crimson.
"Our seniors were impressive today and I am really proud of them," said head coach Felix Mercado. "It's always nice to beat Harvard, but doing it on senior day makes it extra special."
The Bears were hot from the start and jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first eight minutes. Brown then built an even more impressive lead, 7-1, with 2:23 left in the second quarter, but Harvard was able to come up with two goals in the final minute to make it 7-3 at halftime. The Bears cruised to a win from there, as both teams netted two goals in the third to make it 9-5 heading into the final quarter. Harvard was able to fire off five goals in the fourth, but the Bears held strong with five goals of their own to earn the 14-10 victory.
Laing was impressive in the net once again to tally seven saves on the day as Glick led Bruno's explosive attack with six goals, three assists and three ejections drawn. Junior Joanna Wohlmuth had a strong performance posting three goals, three ejections drawn and a steal, while both Brittany Westerman and Katharine Booher tallied two goals apiece. Also adding to the offense was Avery Mosser, Claudia Ruiz and Lauren Presant with one goal each.
