Indiana's Kelsey Campbell Earns Scholastic Achievement Award

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Indiana University junior Kelsey Campbell (Maple Ridge, B.C./Maple Ridge Secondary) was honored by the Indiana Varsity Club at its annual Scholastic Achievement Awards dinner on Friday, April 9.

The Scholastic Achievement Award was established in 1979 by the IU Varsity Club to honor and acknowledge the academic excellence of one student-athlete every year in each varsity sport. The award recognizes the athlete that attains the highest cumulative grade point average on his or her respective team. An additional award is also granted each year to the Student Athletic Board member with the highest grade point average.

The evening's program included remarks from Dr. M. Grace Calhoun, Associate Athletic Director for Academic and Student Development Services; Greg Fox, Vice President of the Varsity Club Board of Directors; Fred Glass, Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics; Mattie White, Assistant Athletic Director for Student Services; and Kelly Noonan, Assistant Athletic Director for Academic and Student Development Services.

"This is quickly becoming one of my favorite events of the year," said Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass. "I couldn't be more proud of our Scholastic Achievement winners and how they represent Indiana University."

A highlight of the evening was a video in which head coaches from all of IU's varsity sports paid tribute to the Scholastic Achievement award winners on their respective teams.

"Kelsey [Campbell] is just a tremendous student-athlete, said head coach of water polo, Barry King. "She is a real inspiration to the rest of her teammates for how hard she works in and out of the pool." He added, "She is just the hardest worker with the biggest brain we've ever had."

Campbell thanked King and others upon accepting her award. "I want thank all my coaches, teammates and parents for all of their support. It's been a great experience so far."

The award recipients will be added to the Scholastic Achievement plaque on permanent display in the north lobby of Assembly Hall.
