Brown's Stephanie Laing Named April 5 Women's Varsity Northern Division Defensive Player of the Week
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Brown University goalie Stephanie Laing (Sr., Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) recorded 76 saves and six steals over 224 minutes of play in a 3-4 week for the No. 20-ranked Bears on the West Coast to earn notice as the April 5 Women's Varsity Northern Division Defensive Player of the Week.
The award marks her fifth Northern Division Defensive Player of the Week nod and the eighth weekly award from the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) in her career. A three-time Northern Division Player of the Week (February 16 & April 27, 2009; March 19, 2007), she previously garnered the Northern Division Defensive Player of the Week award on February 22, March 1, March 8 and March 29.
She anchored a defense which picked up victories over Division III No. 1 ranked Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (8-3 W) and No. 5-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (12-4 W), while downing California State University-San Bernardino (7-6 W OT) and falling to No. 1-ranked the University of Southern California (15-6 L), No. 14 San Diego State University (10-5 L), California Baptist University (12-8 L) and No. 17 the University of California-San Diego (11-7 L).
In the Bears' victory at Pomona-Pitzer, she posted 12 saves before tallying 15 stops in Brown's win at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Against top-ranked USC, she netted six saves and three steals, before chipping in 10 saves versus San Diego State. Following 11 save performances against both Cal Baptist and UC-San Diego, Laing wrapped up the week with 10 stops in an overtime victory versus Cal State San Bernardino.
