No. 7 San Jose State Stymies Harvard 13-7
SAN JOSE, Calif.- The Harvard University women's water polo team dropped a 13-7 decision to No. 7 San Jose State on St. Patrick's Day evening. The Crimson sinks to 8-6 on the season while the Spartans raise their record to 13-8. The loss is Harvard second on the year to an opponent ranked in the top 10 of the Collegiate Water Polo Association national poll.
The Crimson jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead early in the first quarter but found itself only down a goal after the first eight minutes, 4-3. San Jose State held onto a 7-4 advantage going into halftime. The Spartans outscored Harvard 4-1 in the third period and the two squads each netted two goals in the final stanza.
Monica Zdrojewski recorded a hat trick to lead the Crimson offensively. Lizzie Abbott, Kelly Peeler, Shannon Purcell and Patricia Smith all tallied a goal in the game. Devan Kennifer drew five ejections and Aisha Price registered four steals. Netminder Laurel McCarthy turned aside three shots.
